Not many people get to say they witnessed their parents get married. Well, I did.
You see, my mom and I grew up together. She was only 19 when I was born. All of my firsts were also her firsts, which means we went through it all together.
My father was never really around, so it was just my mom and me. Throughout my life, I have witnessed the good, the bad, and the ugly with my mom.
I have watched her date good men and bad men. I’ve watched her lose herself because of a man. Growing up, I never really liked any of the men she dated. She would be in a relationship with someone for years, then it would all come crashing down.
So, when she texts me to ask if she can bring a guy to my 21st birthday trip, I was not expecting much. Just another toxic cycle. But was I wrong.
I got to witness my mom fall in love with an incredible man. A man who brought out the good in her and helped her grow in ways I never imagined possible.
Years later, when I got a message from him saying he was going to propose to my mom, I was beyond excited.
Planning their wedding helped ignite a creative spark within me. I bought an IPad and taught myself how to design on Canva. When looking at invitations, guest book options, etc, I constantly found myself asking my mom, “Why pay for that when I can do it 10 times better?” I wasn’t trying to be cocky, I was trying to be logical.
All the ideas and dreams my mom had for her special day, I made sure we brought to life. After a year of planning and a lot of DIY projects, we did it. February 7th will always hold a special day in my heart.
I’m thankful my mom found her forever partner, and I’m grateful this opportunity pulled me out of a creative rut.
Below are photos of details from that special day.
